I have been interested in self-esteem and the effects that it has on student behavior and achievement. Franken (1994) stated that “self-concept is, perhaps, the basis for all motivated behavior. It is the self-concept that gives rise to possible selves that create the motivation for behavior” (p. 443). I remember being involved in everything in high school from dance, to cheerleading, theater, and band. I spoke with auxiliary director of Frederick Douglass High School, Monique Watson about social effects that extracurricular activities have on students.
What is your take on the involvement of students in activities outside of school?
Every single students should be active in some activity that interests them outside of school. This builds on socioemotional characteristics that students encompass. Involved students are better able to express themselves and problem solve. The fact that they want to participate in activities generally increases their grades.
What changes do you see in your students once they join the band?
My boys and girls participate in the band in several capacities. They dance, twirl batons, spin flags, and riffles. They hard work and dedication that we require on the field transfers into the classroom as well. Things do not come easy and students do not always stay throughout the season. This is where relationships are key. Having positive adults and strong relationships aid development in students.
What are some negative effects of having a high self-esteem?
CLIQUES! Esteem can easily turn into an "us vs them" kind of thing. Many of the bullies throughout the school are those who participate in activities. Sadly, this can also keep others from coming out for the team. We teach the students humility and let them know that attitude determines your altitude. It is important to follow the saying the more the merrier and gladly accept students. Working with teams helps to get more accomplished.

Hello Mrs. Langley,
ReplyDeleteI feel in having great self esteem is a wonderful thing to have. High self esteem is something many people wish that they have. To be fun of fun and excitement. To be involved in activities in or out of school is great to learn and be able to share information with other people and to help them. We need more people in the world that is will to help people and to share ideas. Especially in being an outstanding listener at some time.
